Search engines determine how a site will be ranked in the results by several factors, all of which are closely guarded secrets if you talk with the search engine masterminds. However we were able to pry a few of those secrets away from them.
They are:
How many other sites link to a specific site, the more the better.
How those linking sites are viewed by the search engines is another. If they’re high ranking authority sites on a subject similar to the specific site that’s a better quality link than a brand new blog on a totally different subject.
How many other outgoing links are on the page the specific site is linked from is a factor. The more outgoing links, the more the ranking “Juice” is diluted or shared among those links. The fewer outgoing links the better.
The keywords used to link back to the specific site make a difference. The closer the keyword phrase is to the phrase input by the searcher the higher the ranking in results.
Where and how the keyword phrase is used on the specific site affects results. The phrase should be used as the meta title of the site, in the first header, and several times throughout the content. But don’t overdo it. Search engines give a penalty for keyword stuffing. And don’t think that using a font color that matches the page’s background so the words aren’t visible to a human will work. Search engines are color blind, they’ll see the excessive use of the keywords even if humans can’t.
Internal linking structure affects results as well. To link from the home page to inner pages use the keyword phrases appropriate to the inner pages. Click Here does encourage people to click, but it doesn’t do anything for the search engines.
